A former British exec in the Pension Arena, Tim wrote the international best-selling book, Don’t Ever Give Up On Love-True Stories of Senior Romances. We’ll give you hope, inspiration, and secrets of finding love later in life in highlights of my chat with Tim Carroll during my radio show, A Lasting Love.
Hadley: Some people who’ve lost love often think of excuses why they may never love again, like being too old, too fat, too broke or all the good ones are taken. Those excuses are false. True love awaits you, no matter what your circumstances. There’s no reason to be alone unless you want to be. You’re the voice of senior romantics, Tim. Tell us how you met your second wife and created a blissfully happy relationship at the age of 68.
Timothy: I wasn’t really looking for love after my divorce, when a fellow at a bar invited me to a Christmas party hosted by a woman named Yvonne. When I met her, I noticed how young she looked, even though she was close to my age. I saw the light in her eyes. I saw how she focused on her friendships with other people at her party. I liked her calm, positive qualities and her group of friends who were wonderful, welcoming people.
Hadley: That’s like our Tribe, where you choose positive, resilient friends to support your adventures in starting fresh and loving again. When did you decide to invite Yvonne on a date?
Timothy: It wasn’t until another friend invited me to a second holiday party at Yvonne’s house. I sensed something special about Yvonne, and I think you just know you’ve met your match. As you grow older and know yourself better, you have a better understanding of what kind of person will be compatible with you. You get through the magical attraction to someone’s body to the more magical attraction to their mind, to how they think and behave and what common traits make you feel good.
Hadley: So you were attracted to Yvonne’s qualities that you admired and shared. And you found another sign of compatibility–feeling good while you’re together. Fortunately, you accepted those two invitations to attend parties where you met your future mate.
Timothy: You can’t experience this unless you get out there to meet new people. You have to take that risk for love, which doesn’t always arrive in the form you’d expect. Yvonne had seven grandchildren when I married her, and I’d never had any children in my first marriage.
Hadley: So you instantly became a husband, father and grandfather when you married Yvonne. How did that change or enrich your life?
Timothy: Our house is like grand central station. They’re wonderful people, and I’m fond of them all. Some may see her big family as baggage, yet they are my blessings.
Hadley: Love that attitude. In your book, you interviewed happy couples who explained how they found love later in life. Did you observe common dating success strategies?
Timothy: There are several common threads that drew these couples together: Hoping for something better. Knowing and loving yourself. Being good to yourself. Being loving and lovable. Realizing no one’s perfect. Learning to see perfection in imperfect people. That’s how you find someone who’s perfect for you.
