Love Lessons In A Broken Kneecap

Last week, I made an impulsive choice from which it will take me 6 months to recover.
Now I’d love a ‘DO OVER’.

I’d love to turn back the clocks to 6 a.m. on Monday October 22, 2012, when I’d been working in my upstairs office for over an hour, waiting for my 1 year old granddaughter to wake up in the guest-room at the end of a long hallway.

This time, I’d love to run to greet my granddaughter before her cries woke up my daughter after her late-night rehearsal for upcoming concerts.

What would I do differently in my DO OVER?

Before I ran down the dark hallway, I’d flip on the light switch.
Then I’d be able to see my chocolate lab sleeping on a hallway rug.
I’d be able to step around her, instead of flying over her like I actually did, landing on sharp slats in my new wood floor, and breaking my kneecap into 4 pieces.

Now I know why loan sharks used to punish deadbeats by breaking their kneecaps. The pain is torture, which continues until a surgeon can rebuild the pitellar, the medical term for kneecap.

Three days after my break, my surgeon, Martin Greenberg M.D., worked his magic. Instead of making one long incision on my knee from 12 o’clock to 6 o’clock, Dr. Greenberg was able to make a couple tiny incisions at 12 o’clock and at 3 o’clock. As he looked inside my knee using some sort of XRay scope, he installed 4 screws to reposition each piece to make it whole again.

His successful surgery was phase 1 of my recovery plan. In phase 2, I will wear a cast for 8 weeks, followed by a couple months of rehab that includes ultrasound and arpwave to speed up healing by 30 percent.

While I couldn’t get a DO OVER to turn on the hall light and avoid the injury, I could make choices to speed up my recovery to make up for my momentary lapse in judgement.
