TRIP INFORMATION:

This service trip will be split between La Primavera (Springtime) Settlement and La Pas. http://bit.ly/m7aPcW

La Primavera is one of the poorest neighborhoods in Managua with one of the largest populations. This settlement is where Women in Action is located and carries out projects; women head 80% of the households. Women and children have little opportunity to receive an education because public school is not free. This leads to hunger and prostitution.

The Women in Action projects teach gourd art as a means of bringing in income. They have a soy food program, a gray water program to eliminate standing water in streets, educational sponsorships, and micro-lending program. The WIA Center includes an activity space, kitchen, classroom, community store, and computer room.

La Pas is part of an area called the “Golden Triangle”, because of rich soil. The Golden Triangle is a critical area, it recharges aquifers and rivers, is known for some of Nicaragua’s richest agricultural land, and also serves as a biological channel for many tropical birds. Deforestation due to forestry, agricultural expansion, and firewood consumption has severely reduced the forest coverage within the Golden Triangle. The Brothers and Sisters in Reconciliation Cooperative sponsors the service trip in this area.

In rural Nicaragua, the majority of families still cook with wood stoves contributing to the deforestation. Compas is working with CIPRES (Center for Rural and Social Promotion, Investigation, and Development) to install biogas systems in La Paz. The system provides 7 hours of cooking gas per day, eliminating the use of wood.

Another project is wash water irrigation to eliminate dirty gray water and reuse it to water backyard gardens.

The Brothers and Sisters in Reconciliation Cooperative has decided that its priority for this year is to reforest the La Paz area by planting shade trees and coffee.
