A handsome Medical Doctor I met online once asked me to choose between a relationship with him or with my new pup, since he “hates” dogs. Easy choice. But it concerned me.
I’ve read about newly single women who choose to live with a house full of dogs instead of a new man. I’ve read about newly single men who prefer their dog over a steady relationship with a woman. When you find out the reasons for this trend, you will see how we might reverse it by letting our dogs be our love guide.
How do we know that men and women often prefer their dogs over a romantic relationship?
A recent survey by a mega internet shopping site, shopzilla.com, revealed that 56 percent of the women surveyed felt their dog was more affectionate than their romantic partner. And 45 percent of these women also thought their dog was cuter.
Only 24 percent of the men surveyed felt their dog was cuter, and 41 percent found their dog to be more affectionate than their partner.
Why are many men and women giving more love to their dogs than their romantic partners?
An amusing survey on cougarhunters.com listed some reasons why men prefer a dog over a woman:
* Dogs love it when your friends come over.
* Dogs think you sing great.
* Dogs don’t cry
* A dog’s time in the bathroom is confined to a quick drink.
* Dogs don’t expect you to call when you are running late.
* Dogs will forgive you for playing with other dogs.
* Dogs are excited by rough play.
* Anyone can get a good-looking dog.
* Dogs don’t shop.
* Dogs like it when you leave lots of things on the floor.
* Dogs never need to examine the relationship.
* Dogs don’t hate their bodies.
* Dogs don’t want to know about every other dog you ever had.
* Dogs have no use for flowers, cards, or jewelry.
* Dogs enjoy heavy petting in public.
I found no official list of reasons why women prefer dogs over a new date or mate, so I’m suggesting these:
*Dogs drop everything and give you kisses each time they see you
*Dogs wag their tale when you talk to them
*Dogs jump for joy when you give them a bowl of food
*Dogs don’t care how you look, what you wear, or how you compare with other women
*Dogs stay by your side and comfort you when you’re facing a tough challenge
*Dogs eagerly learn new behaviors to please you (and receive a treat as a reward)
*Dogs greet every guest and make sure you are safe in their company
*Dogs want to be your companion 24-7, especially if you let them sleep on the bed at night
*The only time a well-trained dog causes you pain is in their last farewell —
often at the same time your kids leave for college and your husband faces his mid-life crisis
